Blog #6 – Rethinking Ethics
3 April 2012
The issue of ethics is one that really bothers me. I consider myself to be a rather modern
twenty two year old, and I, personally, find no issues in the way I act and my
beliefs, which many of my closest friends share with me. Our views on things like swearing,
relationships, sex, drinking, smoking, drugs, education, work-place antics, among
many other things, are some that have been approached by elders that we know as
“taboo” and “un-ethical.” We are a close
group and it has been questioned how we are able to justify the fact that, as a
group, we find it ok and acceptable to talk about our sex lives, and go out and
get drunk multiple times a week, and refuse to date, but find it ok to sleep
with whomever we feel like from said group and be ok with it.
I personally feel as if there is not a decline in ethics,
but, in fact, there has been a gradual shift over time which has made more
traditionally taboo things become more acceptable. I am an open minded person and I would never
question a person’s beliefs by comparing them to my own. I also see no need to change my beliefs and
ways of thinking because I am told they are unethical by a more closed and
single-minded person who feels what I say or do or believe is wrong.
I guess after that being said that my biggest issue with ethics
is a person’s view on them and their need to stuff their own opinions of right
and wrong down my throat. Ethics should
be a personal set of beliefs free of judgment from others.
